Arrests In "Unspeakable" Waldport Assault

WALDPORT, Ore. - The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is investigating a brutal assault that took place over the weekend.

Deputies were called to Southwest Pacific Highway around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and found a 17-year-old male beaten, burned and unconscious. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Newport.

The sheriff's office says the victim and the three men who attacked him all knew each other. One acquaintance says the three suspects had a history of taunting and intimidating the victim.

Police arrested 18-year-old Christopher Sparks, 19-year-old Cody Rector and 20-year-old Robert Bernal. Investigators say it started in the victim's apartment. Neighbors said they heard yelling and howling when, according to the charges, the three beat the victim, sodomized him, and burned him with a lighter. All face charges of assault, sexual penetration, harassment and reckless endangering.

The suspects are being held on $262,500 bail and were arraigned Monday afternoon in Lincoln County court.

Sparks, Rector and Bernal are due back in court March 10.

Paying $400 for a spay and that does not include the $150 vet visit yesterday. Another reason to spay and neuter you pets because mow my dog has pyometra and not only are is she getting spayed but also we have give her 2 weeks of antibiotics. She did not seem to be sick but she was having accidents so we thought that something was wrong. For the record the other 3 animals in our house are fixed.

I agree but small town vs. big city.

Greater diversity and higher educated people equal better standard of living. And it's the overall mentality as well. Having lived in both places I know 1st hand. Not to mention the stories I hear from a teacher friend over on there.

Trust me I'm dying to get back costal just think differently now with a kid on the way. Places like Hawaii would also be challenging places to rise kids. Just something been thinking bout recently and this shite like this pisses me off too. Lame!

you are right about the city but man, as someone who works with youth and impoverished families, i can assure you anything thats happening out in the boons is going down in the poor communities within the city limits.

its hard to be a kid in this day and age.

i grew up in a fishing village where i was free to roam around at the age of seven. i had a long paper round at age eight. on weekends, i'd leave home at 8am and return by 5pm and my parents never had to worry. used to deliver papers after dark. no probs. couldn't do that now.

As I said before I agree with your point about the same things happening in the city. I know this. It's not like PDX's public schools are even that great at least in my hood and definately better in yours. It's just in the smaller rural areas kids dont have the same outlets or exposure as they might in the city. Most of the areas are one horse towns. And I guess in the end it has to do with the parents. I know several people who grew up on the coast that are really good people, granted many of them dont live there anymore, but they prob had good parents.

there is a good list of 'factors' that contribute to a positive upbringing that they give us youth workers. i should dig it out...

its a class issue for sure and its also a sign of the times.
