Okay so it is not politically correct, but it is the truth. The thing that ticks me off here is that most of the people in our local homeless shelter are not even from the state. Helping locals is one thing but serving as a Hostile for traveling meth addicts and alcoholics is another.

For the record pink (and neoprene for that matter) is hot on some guys. Not all though.

First do you have some stats?

Actually, it does not matter. It is probably true. I've worked with the homeless for about six years. Lots of homeless kids are from out of town and come to Portland b/c of the comprehensive services.

Did you know if you had an accident in my country we'd sew you up for free... ah... its not even worth arguing....

people are forced into new areas for many reasons. these are either push, or pull reasons. pushed out, or pulled in. almost always an economic need. meth addicts can indeed become "hostile". they are sick, and need help.
i don't think homeless shelters act as "hostels". i believe it's a bit of a process to be admitted into one. because of that, and because of alot of the policies, many in need choose to not take that service. and so, they are in the streets. unfortunately, like any system, it is abused by some who do not need it or deserve it. those that do need it become the victims, yet again.
we have a good time here on the osp making generalizations and stereotypes. and i think pretty regularly, those get called out and set straight. we all do alot of both. i know i do.
i truly hope trula, that you're never put in a position where services will be needed. but if you ever are, then i think you'll gain a huge new understanding.
because some people abuse the system, and because some people do not deserve our compassion...should we no longer have compassion for anyone?

Are you kidding me? And do you personally consider this a good thing? I actually thought about this idea a lot last night after watching Lions for Lambs again. Great movie in some ways. It brought up passing out clean needles and the argument was that maybe then we should also open a lane on the highway specifically for drunk drivers? I have to say, I dont normally chime in with political convo or anything else remotely involving conflicting op....I dont like to feel like I am disrespecting any one else passions....but dude, Im sorry. I dont think supporting and even encouraging drug abuse by passing out free paraphenalia is ok in any way shape or form.

I guess I may sound a little hypocritical, being as I used to play a druggy on the internet, so my two cents is probably worth just that...but I know whats real.

Needle exchange happens every day in Portland. People are going to shoot up no matter what. I know too many kid with HIV/AIDs HEP C. They prostitute themselves, they engage in IV drug use, they engage in all manner of 'high risk' activity. Our goal is to keep them alive while we make efforts to get them off the street.

I've seen little evidence that needle exchange increases drug use. I don't consider it a 'good thing.' I consider it a crucial service in keeping people safe.

A guy I work with spent somethinglike 8 years in child welfare. He left that work is a very depressed individual becuase of what he had to see. Never gotten over it. He used to get pretty serious when I joked about beating my children, but he's lightened up
