What pisses me off...........

This forum is for SURF topics such as localism and rants that are usually negative in nature. If you're a baby, complainer, or generally think you're right and everyone else is wrong this is the place for you. PLEASE NOTE, all forum rules still apply, but just a little more liberally enforced. Registration is required.

Went to VA for an interview and it went as expected. The HR part was just an introduction to the relo and beni's. Part of the relo is they buy your house. Fuggers.., at least make it unattractive. Next they talked about the 5wks vacay and automatic company 401 contribution. The wife is stoked and I am running out of stalling time. And the place on the coast that gave me a phone interview hasn't called back yet.

Watching someone break their wrist yesterday and the first thing they worry about is not having health care coverage. Politics aside, any country with medicine as advanced as it is here, should be caring for its citizens for free. This should be a basic human right and entitlement.

Maybe if they don't have basic medical coverage...

They shouldn't be participating in such an inherently risky activity as skateboarding...

Then again that's their basic human right to make choices despite the known risks and iniquities in any given culture.

Maybe people shouldn't leave their house ever and spend all day disinfecting all the surfaces therein to maximize avoidance of all possible calamity. It's as if the individual has a duty to maintain themselves in working order for society and no duty to themselves to progress personally. The idea that all responsibility lies with the individual and none on the society sucks cause society is a society because people take care of each other. Insurance companies don't take care of people. Corporations take care of people in a very limited way. The system is extremely flawed. Unless you're working for the man, you're in a subclass.

Right. Maybe all uninsured Americans, shouldn't drive cars, breathe polluted air and so on... Most daily activities are risky.

Break you leg on a bicyle tour in the UK and they'll take care of you, whether you are from there or not and there will be no debate about choosing to take risks. Admittlely the British tax payer is fed up with paying for all the Saturday night ambulance rides the drunks get but socialized medicine for you. A small price to pay for having peace of mind for those who don't go looking for illness of injury.

Oh and Coastguard helicopter rides are free also. Incase you are stupid enough to go surfing, fishing, sailing etc. without some form of high risk activity insurance.

I know I know... "Well go back there, then."

if a skateboarder insisted on doing wall rides and curb slides and grinds on the building and amenities of a free clinic...

and then broke their wrist while doing so...

and the State sponsored medical staff refused treatment...

would you think that was poetic justice or persecution?

Both. It is a good question for the NYT Ethicist.

But I also think a few scratches on a curb or wall aren't enough to turn someone away from free emergency treatment.

Society is full of idiots and as much as I'd like to be a libertarian and have people deal with the consequences of the personal choices they make, for now, I feel we are obligated to collectively help people pick up the pieces of their mistakes.

That's why I pay taxes anyway.

It takes a village to raise an idiot, but when the idiot gets hurt, the village would be stupid to think the idiot should fix himself.
