What pisses me off...........

This forum is for SURF topics such as localism and rants that are usually negative in nature. If you're a baby, complainer, or generally think you're right and everyone else is wrong this is the place for you. PLEASE NOTE, all forum rules still apply, but just a little more liberally enforced. Registration is required.

yea, that was indeed the worst break i have ever seen. ive never seen anyone amp themself up for something they wanted so much. Yet be so terrified of that thing at the same time. The consequences were steep and unfortunately she had to feel them. That is one strong chica.

Interesting that every skateboarder I have seen break, dislodge, rupture something the first thing out of their mouth is "shite I cant deal with this right now, I dont have medical insurance"......

I agree with the lack of health care and the situation at hand. But it currently is what it is and risks are risks. Even as a dirt bag rat working for the next powder day, skate sesh, or surf trip. I still took the responsibly of providing health care for myself. Whether it was through the Oregon Health Plan or paying out of pocket for an afforbadable policy, which from what I remember was $80 bucks a month. And after a ligament tear in one shoulder, dislocating the other, a broken wrist, and 20 stitches from a surfboard to head it was the best money I spent. Our policy's need to change, but at the same time you have to make some realizations and step up to the responsibility of taking care of yourself.

I agree. But, (and I know I'm repeating myself here) I tend to feel people are allowed to make mistakes/ poor decisions and part of the concepts of "community" and "society" are to help people out with the consequences of making bad ones.

God knows, we all pay the price for the poor decisions our "representatives" make.

So is enabling people to make bad decisions "helping out"? I wish I could be a Libertarian but I can't and would choose on helping the skater out. The problem is that it ends there, we don't put anymore responsibilities on the person. Goodbye, here's your bill that you will never pay. You probably work minimal and don't give a shite because you are a skate-a-holic. You weren't forced to learn your lesson the hard way.

People will always do stupid sh*$, but it is those that have a repetitive history I wonder about, Why? Why am I paying taxes to this? What about those that would really change if they were given chance. That is summary is why I am against high taxes and social handouts. I would rather give my money to private organizations where at least the checks are better managed and the repetitiveness isn't encouraged.

The age old 'enabling vs harm reduction debate.' It is indeed valid and crucial. I've already made my POV clear but I will always struggle with it. Its never a simple balck and white issue.

Believe me Wawa, I dwell on it daily. Infact my job is to ensure people are not enabled to live off hand-outs.

But.

Universal healthcare: It would be hard to convince me its wrong while I'm paying taxes for the Iraq war.

In this specific case, I'd argue it was neither a mistake or bad decision. Accidents happen.

At first it took time to look by the fact that a large populus of the people without benefits probably are those who offer absolutely nothing back to society except crime. Can't hold a job, like heroin a lot etc..

I've never had a job that didn't have benefits..

But there are a lot of places in this country (small towns and mom n' pop shops) that just don't produce enough cash to offer benefits to thier workers. Some just don't care about thier employees. Walmart will give thier workers minimum wage and no bene's. We still periodically turn our backs and shop there, thus telling Walmart that what they are doing is fine with us.

A president that could come up with free health coverage for Americans and get it passed through congress.. would never have to do another thing in the oval office to be thought of as one of the greatest to have lived.

Won't happen though. Dems and republicans will fight about useless s#**, never get anything done, and in 4-8 years we will still be fighting about the same issues and blaming the president and corporations - who laugh all the way to the bank with a can of caviar in one hand and thier hooker mistress in the other.

F*** them all, this place is never changing until the end.

Without other alternatives (ie. insurance, universal healthcare) I would turn to family, then social institutions like a religion (but I don't belong to any of those so it doesn't apply to me personally) then friends. I would expect the same of her, but if all other means have been exhausted then I'd pitch in what I could. I'm sure everyone's had to ask for help from their family at one point or another.

The Surf Family stepped up to help Cole. I'm sure the Skate Family will step up in this case, if the need be.
