Hey Hump!! How have you been? You are still on the island, right?
The "Rev" and I moved to Ucluelet about three years ago. I can walk to the beach now, which is really nice. Well, we still have to drive mostly because the places that have surf are about 15 minutes drive. No more taking the ferry and travelling for five frigin hours each way every weekend. We sold our house in the mainland and quit both our jobs and moved here. We have since built our house here and life has been really busy but really good! :)

Alright then!!

Sounds great and I'm glad you're over here now.

I'm still in Campbell River but retired and, sadly, divorced too.
Living a simple and self-indulgent lifestyle nowadays but keeping out of mischief.
I bought a super nice wooden Tyee rowboat last year so I row in the Tyee Pool a lot, starting around the end of July plus I have an older (1964) Davidson rowboat I use for trout fishing and stuff.
My buddy bought a Tufline inflatable 10'6" SUP a while back and I'm thinking of getting into that a bit, just for the exercise.

Anyway, nice to see you two are still around and living the life.

All the best and.......

Greetings from Chicago:

My name is Scott, and I am a former runner, recently turned swimmer. I am thinking of relocating to Oregon and taking up surfing.

I am starting at the beginning. I am looking at taking a lesson at Cannon Beach later this month, and I wondered if anyone could comment.

Cheers, Scott

Hey Scott,

Are you moving to Oregon for other reasons than surf? Are you going to move to the coast? There are a lot easier places to learn how to surf but if you are committed to moving to Oregon and surfing, then learning here is probably the best way to go.

Learning about surfing in Oregon should include the following:
Acclimating to water temp
Surfing year round in a wet suit
Water conditions-cold water waves
Swell windows
Rips
Sharks
Beginner beaches
As a beginner, I would imagine that your window for learning in small managable waves will be between now and late September. If you paddle out 2-3 times a week during that time, you might be able to catch a few. Then longer period ground swells will hit from late September through May making it tough for beginners except on smaller swells between storms.

Tex:

That is really helpful information--thank you!

I am a freelancer by profession so it doesn't matter where I am geographically (I am editor).

Portland is my favorite city outside Chicago, so I thought, maybe I can relocate either there or on the coast and pick up a new hobby while I am at it.

Based on your message, it looks like OR surfing takes a bit of intestinal fortitude to make work! Not necessarily a bad thing by any stretch but very good to know.

Thanks again,

Scott
