Surly Locals?

I had heard the localism in Oregon could rival just about anywhere in the world in regards to the surliness of said locals. After a long hiatus I've been back in the water pretty regularly since May. So where (besides the infamous Seaside Point) is localism rife up here? I've hit most of the north coast spots and the vibe has always been pretty mellow. Not complaining- just curious on what everyone's take is.

Surly season is coming up in a few months...plenty of opportunities for more research. I prefer to regulate from the valley.

Found a spot by chance yesterday that was all locals except me- only 5 guys in the line-up including myself. Didn't get a warm-fuzzy from anyone but there was no snakes or other BS.

I have no way to know for sure since none of them were carrying an "I'm a local sign," nor did I get a good look at their driver's licenses (they thought it was weird when I asked.) The fact that they all paddled out separately between 4 and 5 p.m. on a Friday and obviously knew each other was an indication though, especially considering all week this area was a mushy mess yet, as soon as it got decent these guys knew exactly where it was going to break. Like I said, it was pure luck I found it when I did.
Anyways it doesn’t really matter- I’m just making observations. I’m new to surfing in Oregon and only have S. California to compare to. It’s an interesting (and refreshing) surf culture up here. So far.

Agree with Smithgrind....the colder/bigger/better it gets and the further north you go....localism becomes more prevelent. At least that has been my experience.

I've even found the San Diego area to be less aggressive than the North Oregon Coast, any time of the year.

Yeah after having been after it for nearly 2 years up here, I haven't had one run-in at any spot (or even seen one for that matter,) and I get out once a week or so. Back in HB and points nearby scraps were nearly a daily thing. Don't miss that at all.

I almost ended up in a fight with some Kayakers at Arcadia once who didn't like a surfer at their Kayak spot.
Caught them waxing my truck in the parking lot and they ran fast and hard to their car and took off. I think 4 guys, one tiny little car with boats on top.
