Surfer mag or surfing mag, can't remember

Postby mcmanamus » Tue May 03, 2005 6:53 am

Last fall there was a great article on surfer fitness. I'm new to this forum, and I'm not sure if anybody has said anything about it and I don't feel like wading through 10 pages of posts to check, so if its already been posted you get to hear it again! I can't remember all the tips either, so bear with me.

One of the first tips they gave was to NOT lift weights. You're trying to get toned, not be a bodybuilder. Do pushups, situps, and especially pullups.

Get yourself a big board and on small days just get out and paddle for a couple hours.

Something that may prove hard in Oregon, but you CAN do in a pool is running on the bottom. Grab a rock in waters where you can run on the bottom, or load a backpack with bricks and hop in a pool. This will improve your endurance as well as ability to hold your breath.

Running! Surprise surprise. I don't need explain this one.

Try Yoga! This can improve your flexibility and overall athletic ability. Many of the sports top athletes are using Yoga techniques.

Get out and bodysurf. You might not make people happy, but it will give you a MUCH better feel for catching and being in the right spot on a wave.

That's all that I can remember from the article, but I'll see if I can find the magazine when I get back home.

I understand this is from an article you have read...so bare with me...this part here...

...does not only contradict it's own point...but it is really bad advice as well.

Push ups, Sit ups, and Pull ups...all simulate weight lifting and work the same mucle groups as lifting does.

Everyone should know by now that the best thing you can do for your overall health as well as increase stamina and endurance is cardio work. Whoever does not understand that..well...don't breed.

But cardio is not enough, neither is swimming or "paddling around for a couple hours".

You can not get "toned" without strength training. It is just not possible. Now there are at least two distinctly different approaches to lifting, Strength Training (Hi rep-Low Weight) and Bulking (Lower Reps-Higher weight). Obviously Bulking is not what one would want to do for surfing purposes unless you are rail thin to begin with.

As per my advice earlier in this thread..and due to my dedication to my own workout plan...I have increased my endurance, stmina, flexibility and lost 10 pounds. I am no triathelete...no iron man will be ran by me...but I have not been in this good of shape, physically or mentally...in a long time. I noticed it the other day as I was paddling out...I was not as "worn out" once outside. I had more power in my paddling for waves (tricep extensions, french curls), more power in my lower body...as well as a faster recovery from geting pummeled.

Personally...in my never to be humble opinion...if you are entering a train ing routine for surfing, but are not including weight lifting...you are cutting the effectiveness of your time in half.

I subscribe to the SooLoo school of surf fitness. Eat fried and fatty food. Drink copious amounts of beer and liquor. Surf as often as you can.

Koon, I agree that SooLoo's fitness regimine it tits... but wait until you're in your late 30's or older... and that sh!t will come back to haunt you. I'm speaking from experience.

I've been exercising like a freak since january with no significant improvement in my surfing ability. (yes, I'm in good paddling shape but slap a 50 lb pack on your back and see what it feels like) At some point I may give up and just try eating healthy. Sucks.. because a) I love stuffing my face. and b) in the past all I had to do to get in shape was start working out.

I am in my late 30's. I'm pretty active, so I burn off the crap that I eat. I do mainly low weight/high rep & work out on my heavy bag.

Smoking Crack does not count.

work out on my heavy bag.

According to your Missus...your bag aint that heavy...but you do "work out" with it a lot.

The SooLoo plan to better surf fitness is all about dedication. these guys are dedicated athletes that have taken their regimen very seriously, and therefore have seen outstanding results from the SooLoo plan.

I myself am way to much of a slacker to dedicate myself to the SooLoo plan.

Are you kidding me??? Damn!!!! I've been hitting it pretty good. but would suck wind big time on those intervals. I'm hitting hundreds on about the 1:15 or 1:20 and need way more rest than that to recover especially on a 2000 yd set. I like the box cars 25,50,75,100,100,75,50,25 you told me about. Easy to rack up yards without hurting too much. Just keep doing them over and over..

And following Wilburs advice I've been llifting a couple times a week. Which has made a big difference in my overall strength.

Still, diet is probably holding me back more than anything else. oh.. my doctor told me at my last physical a couple years ago to quit drinking beer and stick to hard liquor. Apparently it has less calories. Hmm.... but I like beer. So here I am. 8)

You can't shoot a cannon out of a canoe....

The point being, core strength is fundamental for explosive power, balance, and it's a key factor in injury prevention. Most people with lower back problems would be 100% cured if they had more strength & stability in their core region.

I'm not talking situps here....there are many better exercises that work the front, back & sides of your core. Proper form is key - look into Pilates or yoga based exercises if you want to mix it up.

Plus, chicks dig nice abs
