Stiff, I just finished Cannery Row too and really enjoyed it. I also really liked Sea Wolf.

Cruise of the Snark is awesome... I was probably most impressed by his wife. It didnt sound like anybody went out of their way to be too nice to her, she got dissed by the islanders, sick, and still she ried at the decision to end the trip. In the version that we had theres a pic of her on the beach with her petticoats and dresses and a revolver on a belt. Cool.

Read that one too, though old dava did a great job on it. Can you imagine going to sea without being able to adequately derive longitude? It's nuts.

Before the mast: On a sailing ship

A barqe typically is the ship that doesn't fall into a particular catagory, it's a generic term, but in modern parlance it means something typically with three or more masts, which is rare

A brig is typically a vessel with two mast were the foremast is square rigged or both mast are square rigged, other sails are okay such as the top gallant and staysails.
