So, I swim and run a lot, but the running part has been getting to my knees lately and I'm finding that my flexibility has started to suck. So, this year, 007, I decided to replace running with yoga. I used to do it, but have taken about 2 years off because I'm not much of 'class' kind of exerciser guy.

But, I found a good one. MAN IT KICKED MY BUTT. Jesus Christ, I could barely walk this morning. You know it's funny-- these yoga instructors are all like shanti, shanti, shanti, peace with all living things and crap, while meanwhile they're making you hurt and I find myself saying, 'phuck you' in my head-- rather than concentrating on keeping from letting my prana leak, as I shake and tremble in ye old boat pose and lightning bolt (also eagle) pose.

But, it's good to be back on it. That chit is really amazing for the body. Hurts though, at least for now. Think I'll try for two days a week for now.

FW, you're carrying my board down to the break tomorrow....

Muscle memory is amazing. The body remembers. An hour of Power Vinyasa Yoga today......and I didn't want to kick yoga nick's azz by the time I was done.

Still have a ways to go.....before I'm back up to my standards of "being in shape". Gettin' there though.....

Pool time. Lots of pulling. Some stroke. Some kick. 3200 meters worth.

Logged in another session of Bikram Yoga. An intense hour of stretching in a room heated to 100+ degrees.

Mile and half in the pool these days, lots of butterfly. NMM, I'm doing a mile and half in 55 minutes. How slow am I?

Drink more wine and you won't care how slow you really are.

Gillsy......you're getting in roughly 2500 meters in just under an hour......and much of that is stroke work. You're not that slow.

Slowness is relative though. You're not training for the olympics.....how fast do you need to be? Fast enough to maintain your target heart rate? Fast enough to not get lapped by the bluehairs? (That's always my goal.)

If you're serious about maintaining your target heart rate......and improving. Here ya go....

Without getting into sets and send-off times. Aim for completing your 2500 meters in 45 minutes. Break it down into 1000's or even 500's. 18 minutes for each 1000. Use the clock...or a watch....to keep track. Doesn't sound like much of a drop......but you'll really notice those 10 minutes. Of course....I don't recommend doing it all fly. (unless you're wilko....but he's nuts)

Seriously though.......I couldn't really give a ratsass how slow or fast you go. You're in the water doing it......all that really matters. (just stay out of my way....if we ever share a lane)

Just for comparison purposes.........I did my 3200 meters today in about 50 minutes. That's with stroke....with pulling....with rest.

haven't checked in in this thread for awhile but i'm taking fitness serisously again these days. currently i'm tipping the scales at 196. yeaaaahhh. i used to surf/ skate, run/ cycle/ swim on a daily basis. plus i used to physical work. moving to this country, marriage and fatherhood, slowly cut down on them all, this along with my decaying youth has resulted in me becomming rather portly.

so, in an effort to ensure i can still surf a 6'4", i'm going to give up beer and unneccesary sweet food. and drink a lot more H2O.

i've started to cycle a longer route home from work. i'm doing some weights, push ups and sit ups and me and the 2 year old are having mad dance parties when mum is at work. i'm going to weigh in each week and post the results, much like wilbur promised to do back in the day.

the only downside is i will have to sacrifice speed on my downhill skate runs. as this is the only discipline where my weight gives me an advantage over smithgrind.

see, my weight would kick Smither's butt on a downhill but there are other advantages. Like if he gets out of line and I have to sit on him.

I felt like crap in the water all of last year. The worst year for my surfing ever. My excess weight put a strain on my paddling, breathing, yelling at people, etc...

I'm hoping by this summer things will be better. I'm 15 pounds lighter now but still feel like crap.
