Easin' back into it...

400 free
400 back
400 kick

12x50 @ 1:00 sideline kick down modified catch-up back

Then I kind of dinked around doing some 50's for about 600 or so.

I grabbed two 10 lb. diving bricks for a little something I've been thinking about.

I started with 30 sec. vertical flutter kick elbows at the surface and then dove down and held onto the bricks on the bottom for as long as I could. I was averaging 20-25 seconds underwater.

Modified it: Treading water with one brick in each hand. Each minute I would "rest" and sink to the bottom for as long as I could handle. First time was about 10 seconds. Two minutes into it I was wondering how long I could last. After about 10 minutes of continuous time with the bricks I was able to get my "resting" time up to 20 seconds.

You know swimming is not unlike making love to a big beautiful woman. A lot of repetition is needed to get the desired result, yet sometimes one has to take a deep breath and dive deep to get there a bit quicker.

This may have been covered but there's no way I'm going to search through thirty pages. Surfing has become my sole source of excersise besides skating but thats mostly legs. My shoulders and back are always sore even after a week of not surfing. I stretch a lot. Not yoga, more like calisthenic kind of stretching you do in PE during high school. I think I need to add some sort of opposite routine. My question is are there work outs any one does to balance surf related excercise besides stretching and if you do how does it effect your surfing, e.g. down time from recovery?

Swimming is a great alternative to surfing. It will increase your endurance, paddling power, and comfortability in the water. Throw a couple of swimming workouts in your mid-week and you'll probably have less soreness after surfing.

You like doing the calisthenics? .......add push-ups & pull-ups. Will keep your shoulders & back strong. ....and less likely to be sore after paddling. And of course......get in the pool.

Biggest problem you're going to face..........if you don't use it......you lose it.

if you want to stay in tip top shape for surfing go paddle around on a lake and run a few miles.

thanks for the suggestions. I used to run and do push-ups but my motivation faltered. Guess it's time to start up again.

swimming ontop of surfing seems like it would definetly add to water power but don't you ever feel unbalanced in your muscle strength? Seems like if all I did was swim then all the non-swimming muscle groups would atrophy.

Nah, I don't like any excercise really unless it comes as a fringe benefit of something fun.
I'll try all that. thanks again all.

Why is it so easy to get out of shape, but so hard to get in shape?

You're an engineer, Dub. It's called the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

Alright, I haven't surfed since the fall--no excuses, and the thought of surf nags at me. I also don't want noodle arms when I get back in the water.
I haven't been going to the gym, but I do burpees, a combination of different pushups, and a couple other exercises I recommend.
One--get into plank position, and pull yourself across the floor (not carpet, duh) in a seal walk. For the big guys, try putting your feet on a weight and dragging that with you.Your delts will suffer.
The other one--get into knee push-up position, hold onto a rolled up towel with both hands. Alternate sliding your hand under the opposite arm, then back. Great for the core, also.

I know there is no substitution for surfing, but it will keep your arms looking like you could paddle at any moment.

Pushups are the way to go, ladies!

Actually not an engineer, environmental desk jockey, but I work with lots of them and fark thier boring people. God forbid if I ever become one. In fact I may loose my job if I don't demonstarte some self controll and stop posting on this site. If I do, HD can you put me to work on the coast? I have some decent programing skills, think your in computers, and I'm looking for a tow partner? Well back on topic, off to the gym to swim. So boring! Put on 5 or so over the holidays.
